The Missouri Compromise On the year of 1820 the Missouri compromise was an effort to maintain power between the slaveholding states and the Free states. Salve holding states feared being outnumbered because they would lose power to protect their properties and the trade. The Missouri compromise passed the senate on March 2, 1820 and the house on February 26, 1821. Slavery was in the Northwest Territory even after it was prohibited in that area.
