Tuesdays with Morrie is narrated by the author, Mitch Albom, and describes the long term relationship that he has had with his favorite college professor, Morrie Schwartz. The book begins as Mitch remembers his college graduation and his promise to Morrie that he would stay in touch with him. However, he never did; instead he found himself living a fast-paced life as a newspaper reporter working long hours and traveling around the country trying to be successful in his career. One evening as Mitch was watching television he saw Morrie on “Nightline” and decided to call him to set up a time to meet with him again. He enjoyed the close relationship he had with him in college and saw Morrie more as a father than a professor. He felt badly about not keeping his promise to stay in touch. During the time since Mitch’s graduation, Morrie had become ill with a devastating disease called amyotrophic lateral sclerosis or ALS. Since this is a fatal disease and Morrie knew he would die soon, he began thinking about and writing about his feelings on life and death. This was the topic he discussed when he appeared on “Nightline”.

It took Mitch a while to learn this, but he finally did. Hopefully he will die knowing he lived his life for a reason and that he made a difference. I think that the purpose of the book was just that. We all have a limited time on earth and we are all going to get old and die, therefore, we have to do things that make our time on earth meaningful to us and to the ones we love.
