Modern heroes come in many different shapes and sizes depending on the crisis that calls for the hero. Some show that they are a hero by saving people from burning buildings or by catching the murderer, thief, or criminal mastermind. Others are heroic in a more discreet way; they help people out of unjust parking tickets or they give check-ups at free clinics for those who cannot afford much. Often, just being a good leader can be enough. Politicians are heroes because they lead with confidence and set examples. Margaret Thatcher, the Iron Lady, is a modern-day hero who would be admired by the ancient Greeks in the way they admired their heroes, for showing the same resilience, intuition and perseverance found in Odysseus.

In the same way, Margaret Thatcher continues to work hard even when conditions are not great. She vows to pull the United Kingdom out of the 1980 recession. She makes hard choices and major decisions like cutting government spending in half instead of increasing it (Monaghan). In the end, things were made better because of Margaret Thatcher’s perseverance.
