The modern day plague; ISIS In the middle ages people battled plague. Today, plague isn’t Black Death or Smallpox, but Isis, a radical islamic terrorist organization that creates chaos in the middle-east and cowardly attacks civilians in western societies. Isis plagues once peaceful middle-eastern cities with havoc and warfare, and western civilization with brutal terrorist attacks such as rape, stabbings, shootings, bombings, and more.
ISIS is not only a problem to the Middle East, but to the world! ISIS is a group of radical Islamic terrorists that follow their own twisted version of Islam and Sharia law. It was an ally of, and had similarities with, Osama bin Laden's al Qaeda. Both were radical anti-Western terrorist groups dedicated to creating an independent Islamic State in the Middle-East. ISIS, unlike al Qaeda, which disowned the group in 2014, has proven to be more brutal and more skilled at controlling territory it’s captured. (Greene 1-2). The Islamic State is a terroristic Sunni muslim movement that has taken over territory in Western Iraq, Eastern Syria, and Libya, from where it tried to establish the caliphate, claiming political and theological authority over the world’s Muslims. The group's momentum in Iraq and Syria decreased in 2016 because local forces, backed by a U.S. led alliance, fought back Islamic State fighters from much of the territory they controlled. But major cities, including Mosul and Raqqa, remain under ISIS control. In both Iraq and Syria there are few signs of the political progress. (Laub 3-5).
While the growth of ISIS may appear sudden, the start of the group would go back to the American invasion of Iraq in 2003, which caused a trend of anti-American ideas that caused the start of terrorist groups targeting Western forces and Iraqi groups. A counter argument may be, “They are only fighting with us because we’re invading their country” or “If we leave them alone, they’ll leave us alone”. This, however, is not true.
