Culture is everything about a person, but more specifically how they react to everyday situations. It is how a person is shaped through their environment. Comparing and contrasting two different cultures such as in two American sitcoms such as The Brady Bunch aired mostly in the 70’s and Modern Family which is trending now show tremendous changes in the cultural lenses by which families were and are perceived now a days. The Brady Bunch depicts Brady, a widower with three kids, that marries Carol, who has three kids as well. Based on the episode “gets grounded” in The Brady Bunch their show revolves around frog races, sister’s cheering, library studying, movie dates, concert dates, talk with parents, and the family getting along. For example, in the Thanksgiving episode of Modern Family where it's more customary to spend time together as a family, the daughter is planning on leaving on a trip to Cabo with an older boyfriend. One doesn't expect to see this in the Brady Bunch where they have family dinners and proper conversations with each other. The Brady Bunch tends to depict family as an almost perfect structure. Such as in The Brady Bunch’s Greg gets grounded episode where at the end of the night Greg learns his lessons and tells his parents all about it. As a teenager, that is a little unlikely to happen, especially so soon into the punishment.
On the other hand, a similarity from both shows was certain ingrained customs such as Greg acting as if he was interested in his father’s architectural plans to try and get what he wanted. In Modern Family the girls older boyfriend also acted interested in the dad’s conversation because he wanted to let him know about the trip to Cabo. Certain things such as that the families are united in both shows seem unaffected by possible cultural differences between both shows.
In conclusion, both shows aired in very different times and cultural eras. Therefore, the cultural lenses which by they are seen are inevitably different. The family dynamics in The Brady Bunch are much more censored and perfected than those in Modern Family. Nevertheless, both shows portray united families no matter the race, age, gender, or culture
