In a society that values observing the comedic aspect of families, the writers of Modern Family takes us into the idea that families that don't always make accords have more funny situations. By using the comedic device of reversal and verbal irony the producers emphasize that although it might seem hectic at times, the family still upholds its important values, as seen in the pilot episode. Reversal in comedy is giving the audience the opposite of what they might expect. It is usually assumed that in a family the mom is the one that tries to be hip and cool, however it is important to not that the mom is uptight and the dad is trying to be in touch with his youth and relaxed. The context misleads the audiences and then later revealing how far apart they’ve imagined something. When we saw Gloria and Jay’s son Manny, he is seen as a small chubby kid that is very athletic or into sports at first. Yet he has the confidence to express his love for someone attractive and much older. In the car scene Manny stated with certainty “I want to tell Brenda Feldman I love her”. It is typically common for the parents to take initiative by telling Manny that it might not work out. Usually people tend to abide to society by managing their own kids and telling them what they can or can't do. Although Manny got rejected by his crush, parents shouldn’t tell their kids who they can or can’t love.
Overall, Modern Family shows the comedic device of reversal, and Irony which are both crucial factors for the show to be funny and unique in its own way. The Phil’s family is still glued together although they have role reversal, and Manny is so independent while in a disadvantage of having no siblings or parents that actually parent. Through the show, we can say that family members don't constantly need to always truce in order to stay
