The Modoc tribe of Oklahoma is the smallest tribe in Oklahoma. They were originally from northeastern California and southern Oregon. They eventually had to move to Oklahoma due to conflicts. Nowadays, more Modoc Indians live in Oregon than Oklahoma. There are now many things they do now. For example, the Modocs operate their own housing authority, a casino, etc. But this wouldn`t have happened if it weren`t for their history. About a couple hundred years ago, the Modocs lived in southern Oregon and northeastern California. On the north side of where their tribe was located, there is the forest of the Ponderosa pines. Lava Beds, which are now a national park, formed their southern boundary. They were hunters, fishermen, and gatherers who followed the seasons for food. Sometimes they gathered together and formed war parties to drive out any unwelcome visitors. Instead of driving out unwelcome visitors, they also raided neighboring tribes. …show more content…
As more and more Americans arrived, they needed more land for farming. The Modocs ceded their land and had to sign a treaty stating that they had to live alongside the Klamath Indians. Then Captain Jack led a group of Modoc Indians off the territory and went to the lost river area of northern California. The treaty was ratified and Captain Jack was supposed to return to the territory but he refused, this later resulted in the Modoc war. The war stands out in American military history as one of the most incredible Indian wars. After the war Captain Jack and five other Modoc Indians were put to death by being hung.
