Nicknamed Molly Pitcher, and born circa October 13, 1754, Mary helped out in the revolutionary war. She was born in Trenton, New Jersey to Maria Margaretha and Johann Georg Ludwig with a brother, Johann Martin. She married at the young age of 15 with William (a.k.a. John) Hayes and moved to Carlisle, Philadelphia a year before they married, in 1768. William was a local barber that enlisted in the artillery as a gunner for the Continental army. During the Philadelphia Campaign from 1777-1778, “Pitcher followed Hayes back to New Jersey,” to be able to “help as needed.” It wasn’t uncommon for wives to do that, and it was a general expectation to help out the war and soldiers when needed.
