The Concentration of Acetic acid IN THE unknown Vinegar substance

By: Mohamed Abdelfattah , Aizaz
Teacher: Mr. Cox
Course: SCH3U0

Purpose
To determine the acetic acid concentration in vinegar substance.
Hypothesis
Since the concentration of acidic acid in vinegar is commonly 5% the concentration of vinegar substance should be close to that number.
Lab Materials
1- Pipette 2-burette 3-volumetric flask 4-three 100ml beakers
5- Retort stand 6- suction blub 7-labels 8-funnel
9-sheet of white paper 10-sodium hydroxide 11-distilled water 12-tap
Lab Procedure
Refer to page 402 in the textbook

Trail 2

10.7 ml
39.3 ml
Trail 3

39.7 ml

Analysis
1. The Average burette readings= (first reading + second reading + third reading) ÷ 3 (11+10.7+10.2) ÷3 = 10.63g
No, this readings had bigger + values than 0.2 mL.
2. The neutralization reaction is
CH3COOH + NaOH  NaCH3CO2 + H2O
3. Concentration of acetic acid = n ÷ v
The Concentration =0.0092mol ÷ 0.010L = 0.92mol/L
4. Mass of acidic acid= mol x molar mass m= 0.0092mol × 60.06g÷mol =0.553grams

5. Mass of vinegar = the density of vinegar × volume of vinegar
Mass of vinegar =1.049g/ml × 10ml = 10.49g
Mass percent of acidic acid= (The mass of acetic acid ÷ the mass of vinegar) × 100 %
Mass % of acetic acid= (0.553g÷10.49g) X 100% = 5.27%
