Monsanto Is Not Satan
It is early spring. Farmers are ready to start planting. One farmer, who wants to save some money, uses some saved seeds from the previous year. Monsanto, the evil corporation that had sold him the seeds last year, finds out about the farmer’s seed saving. Monsanto immediately takes the poor man to court and sues him. The farmer ends up with no money and has to pay a bunch of legal fees. Monsanto, a corporation of endless greed that is eradicating humanity because of actions like this. A company of scientific deception that is destroying the environment by using chemicals in their food and bullying local farmers by not letting them seed save. Seed saving is when a farmer reuses a crop the next year. When a company, like Monsanto, patents a product or invention, it prevents other people from making and selling copies of it. When farmers seed save, they are illegally using Monsanto’s invention for their own profit. So seed saving is patent infringement. Joe Satran, a writer for the Huffington Post, claims that it should be okay for farmers to seed save because farmers use natural processes to do it (Santran 6). This just goes to show how clueless the media is. It doesn’t matter whether a farmer breaks the law naturally or not. They are still breaking the law when they make copies of Monsanto’s patented product. Farmers are aware that they aren’t allowed to seed save. When farmers buy from Monsanto, they sign an agreement saying they can’t save the seeds bought by Monsanto (Newsroom 2). There is even credible evidence showing that genetically modified plants are just as safe as non-genetically modified foods (FDA 12). It seems like once people hear the word chemical they immediately jump to the conclusion that it is dangerous. But everything has chemicals, literally all matter has chemicals (Science 1). GMOs do have more chemicals than organic foods, but there have been no studies detecting an unsafe amount of chemicals in GMOs (Carroll 20). So why does the media insists that organic food is the only way to be sure that you are not poisoning yourself when multiple studies have been done and show that organic food is not better for you or have more nutrients that GMOs? Aaron Carroll, a professor of pediatrics at Indiana University School of Medicine and the director of its Center for Health Policy and Professionalism Research, says that the results from the studies saying organic is better for you lack evidence, are unconvincing, and lack information about how organic food is better for you (Carroll 4). Some people think that organic is better for you because they contain more antioxidants. Antioxidants are good because they prevent chemicals from harming your body. However, there is no proof that more antioxidants lead to better health. Also, it is believed that organic crops are more rich in nutrients.
