Monsters, Inc. is a modern day animated fairytale, set in the fictional city of Monstropolis. In this up and coming city of the monster world, the film begins by depicting a powerful monster duo, Mike and Sulley, en route to work at Monsters, Inc. Like a utility company, the monster world is powered by the energy collected from small children’s screams at the company. However, monsters are actually terrified of kids. The task of containing a scream is accomplished by one monster walking through a portal door that leads to a random child’s closet, and scaring them in the middle of the night; therefore, a scream is harnessed and stored in a canister (Ebert, 2001). Although they seem unlikely friends, the pair of Mike and Sulley work well as a team. They utilize humor to cope with the pressures of their jobs. Mike lovingly said, “You and I are a team. There is nothing more important than our friendship” (Vitto, 2013). People should be celebrating each other’s differences because at the end of the day, we all need love and acceptance.
Disney had an instant classic with the film Monsters, Inc. The plot of Monsters Inc. has many life lessons to offer. In an anxiety-ridden world where there is always something to fear, the movie depicts that joy can be found in all around. As the main characters illustrate, friendships crutch our lives tremendously. Some people get so wrapped up climbing the corporate ladder that they sacrifice relationships with family and friends.
As this movie shifts, the viewer’s paradigm of scary monsters to family-friendly, relatable beings that desire love and acceptance. This same concept was intended to reach the younger audience also, in a way that all generations can relate to. The characters of this movie elevate a virtuous
