Montag's Mistakes In Fahrenheit 451

We are all humans, and as humans we all have flaws and aren’t perfect. Just like Montag, there are things that we are good at and things that we are bad at. When we make mistakes like Montag does countless times throughout the story, we need to learn from them and forget and move on. One example of this toward the end of the story is when Granger reminds Montag that we all make mistakes, but how we deal with it determines if it is a good mistake or a bad mistake. If we make a bad mistake we waste a learning moment, or a chance to get better. Just like Montag we are humans who are bound to make mistakes, but the right mistakes are the ones that shape who we are and who we will become because we learn from them.

One man in particular, Granger presents himself and the rest of the group to Montag as having the same cause as him, preserving books Granger explains to Montag that everyone out of this group that lived all over the world memorized a book and that they were the last of that book on the planet, Montag criticizes himself about having the same cause, but making too many mistakes on the way. Granger then reminds him about what the right mistakes are.”We’re used to that, We all made the right kind of mistakes, or we wouldn’t be here.” In this quote Granger is telling Montag that it’s ok to make mistakes and that mistakes are human, and there’s no shame in admitting that we made them. But the right mistakes shape us, help us learn from them, and allow us to grow as people.
