Bag Tax in Montgomery County The bag tax in Montgomery county almost useless. Paying 5 cents for each plastic bag at any store. People still buy the bags and still throw them away and litter and leave them all over the place. Sometimes people aren’t even charged for the bags. Yet at times even if people are charged for the bags they still liter ,at least the bag tax can be used to clean up the environment. But in the end is the bag tax really to clean up the pollution issues in the county. All retail establishments in Montgomery County who provide customers a plastic or paper carryout bag at the point of sale are required to charge 5 cents per bag. I work at Weis markets both as a cashier and cart pusher and i can personally tell you that this bag tax is not working from my point of view. 60% of people barely ever get charged for getting plastic bags and in self check out roughly 80% of people are not honest and do not include bags in their purchase. As a cart pusher i can see half the people throw their bags in the trash when their is recycle bin just for plastic bag, i watch people who walk home take it out of the bag and throw the bag on the ground. Cashier rarely charge people for the plastic bags simply just because it’s faster and easier to press zero instead of counting every individual bag. …show more content…
The revenues help to shift the burden of litter cleanup costs from public taxpayers to consumers who have a choice to avoid the 5-cent charge by bringing reusable bags. The bag tax is used to help clean up litter but if i walk from my house to work (0.8 mile walk) i do not pass an area where i do not find litter of any sort. My family personally uses re-useable bags to avoid paying the 5-cents-per-bag fee but when we forget we pay and sometimes we don’t. People forget the point of the bag tax is to keep environment clean but it doesn’t seem to be working too well
