Montresor Unsympathetic Character

In the story “The Cask of Amontillado,” the narrator, Montresor, tells a chilling story of revenge. As narrator of the story, there are only his words to go by and could possibly not be true. Montresor is said to be an unreliable and unsympathetic character that can not be trusted. Any reader of this story could say that Montresor is an unreliable narrator. In other words, he can not be trusted. In “The Cask of Amontillado,” Montresor tricks Fortunato into going down to his vaults to taste a type of wine to determine if it is truly Amontillado. As they are deep into the vaults, Montresor chains Fortunato to a stone and begins to wall up the entrance to the small crypt. Fortunato became confused and started shouting at Montresor. Many years go by and Fortunato is never heard from again. Montresor is described as a cold, silent killer. It is still not certain if he is a murderer or if Fortunato died from the harmful gas in the air, but he still remains a suspect for his death. …show more content…
He was so attached to the fact that he has been insulted by Fortunato in the past and he needed to seek revenge. However, Montresor has no proof of Fortunato disrespecting him but he would show no mercy towards him anyways. Montresor knew Fortunato’s obsession with wine so he planned his revenge around that subject. He showed no sympathy for Fortunato’s actions and planned to lure him into the deep vaults. In the “death” of Fortunato, Edgar Allan Poe uses and auditory imagery to show the reader thats the last sound heard from Fortunato, while trapped in the vault, was the sound of the bells on is hat.
