Why do so many people take vengeance into their own hands? Perhaps it gives them a feeling of justice and a way to cope with their injuries. In “The Cask of Amontillado,” the main character Montresor acts out his sweet revenge on an unsuspecting Fortunato. In this story written by Edgar Allen Poe, the author creates an ominous and suspenseful mood to accompany his theme of revenge.
First of all, Poe delivers the spine-chilling mood through the setting. An example of this is right at that moment where the author was describing when Montresor and Fortunato were leaving to go to the catacombs. He remarks on “drawing a roquelaure” when Fortunato is next to Montresor (Poe 346). Roquelaure is French for a man’s knee-length cloak, which was popular during the 18th century, which sets a time frame for us to understand more of the story. For instance, Montresor wants to get revenge back at Fortunato. He has been given a “thousand injuries of Fortunato” and he “vowed revenge” for he knew where it would hurt Fortunato the most (Poe 344). Poe sets the mood by casting revenge upon the insulting actions of Fortunato. As the reader analyzes the text, Poe gives the plan of excussion of Montresor. He states that Fortunato “had a weak point” over “his connoisseurship in wine” (Poe 344). Montresor knew he had to get Fortunato through his weak spot of wine. The characters’ actions set the mood in the story.
