Moonlight is a 2016 drama film, in which I believe one of the main themes is about community. The film is based around one community of people, and is mainly limited to five main characters and a few extra side characters. The community in this film is made up of mainly black males, there are no white characters in the entire film. The main characters consist of a few females, including Chiron’s mother and Teresa (Juan’s Girlfriend). With this limited amount of people you can easily tell how the characters are connected and interacting with each other. The movie seems it is holding a lot of the characters emotions back, mostly the male characters, having to hold back their emotions, in particular, young Chiron. He would barely speak, and didn’t show much emotion. “Many have discovered that the behavior expected of men does not adequately allow for communication and the expression of emotions,” I agree with this review ideas, instead of Chiron showing emotions through tears or a smile, the camera showed the emotions by either shaking, or staying still. I feel all of the themes, poverty, homosexuality, and emotions, are all sub topics of community. With this thought, I agree with the review made by Reelviews, “Moonlight is about poverty, intolerance, the battle to overcome seemingly insurmountable obstacles, and love.” They even add to it by saying, “One doesn’t have to be gay or black or male to empathize with Chiron’s battles.” This is proving the film isn’t only about one sole topic, and it’s not only directed at homosexuals.
