1. Facts: Patty Hearst was kidnapped by a terrorist group. She was raped, beaten, and constantly taunted and threated by the terrorist. She was told to participate in a bank robbery with the terrorists group and if she didn’t comply, then her family would be killed. A bank guard was shot during the bank robbery.
2. Relevant Values and concepts: Patty participated in the robbery to ensure her safety
Patty wanted to makes sure her family wasn’t harmed
Patty had no choice other than to participate in the robbery for her safety and her families.
3. Moral Dilemma: if Patty decided not to participate in the bank robbery, then her family would’ve been killed. Also, she could risk being killed or continually rape and taunted by the terrorist group. However, her participation during the robbery is a risk to the employees of the bank and their safety.
4. Immediate moral or ethical issue: The most immediate moral facing Patty Hearst is her willingness to commit an armed robbery and harm other individuals in order to save herself and her family.

Resolve the ethical or moral dilemma: of the three systems, I believe that the Utilitarianism and Ethical Egoism systems applies to this dilemma. The reason I think Utilitarianism applies is because although Patty commit a bad act it resulted in good consequences, which was saving herself and her family lives. According to the course text, even a bad act, if it results in good consequences, then it is defined as good (Pollock, 2014). In addition, I think Ethical Egoism applies is because Patty didn’t want to commit the bank robbery but she did for her own self- interest to save herself and family.
