When books or short stories are made into movies, the audience is usually disappointed in the ways that the film differs from the writing. The Most Dangerous Game by Richard Connel also has many similarities and differences between the movie and story version. The most important differences are how the main character ends up arriving at the island and the number of characters, the most important similarity between both is the resolution. These points are worth noting because they can drastically change the plot even if both versions are telling the same story. The first major difference between the plot of the short story and movie is how Rainsford, the main character, gets to Ship-Trap island in the beginning of the story. While reading the original short story, it is told that after a conversation with his friend Whitney, Rainsford goes up to the after-deck to smoke when he hears three gunshots. While trying to figure out where the sound came from, he loses balance and falls into the water, abandoned, he has no option but to swim to shore. During the short story, the reader is only introduced to Ivan and General Zaroff when Rainsford arrives on the island. However, there are two extra characters, Eve and Martin Towbridge, in the movie version. This effects the plot because now there is an extra event in the rising action of the movie when Martin is brought into the General's trophy room and is killed. There is also the fact that Rainsford brings Eve with him into the jungle to play the General's game together after he is promised she will be part of his prize along with freedom to leave the island. The fact that the main character teams up in this version where he went alone in the short story means that every event from that point onward is changed
