The novel, Ishmael, written by Daniel Quinn, showcases the divide between human culture and Mother Nature, but also provides an opportunity for self realization through a spiritual adventure between the narrator and his captivated guru gorilla named Ishmael. While reading the novel, Ishmael illuminates that humans have created the world as a monopoly for themselves without acknowledging Mother Nature. Ishmael's accusation that humans are responsible for the disconnect between the relationship between Mother Nature and human evolution raising the questions: How do we break the cycle of the blame game between Mother Nature and humans? However, Ishmael’s critique on human civilization highlights that the blame game is only a one way street. Consequently, the issue is two-sided and raises the ultimate conflict of: how do humans and nature restore their relationship that has been neglected for thousands of years?. The muddled relationship between man and Mother Nature is emphasized when Ishmael turned his back to the spectators and then the spectators shot him a “dirty look” to which he “deserved”, but the spectators did not wait for Ishmael to turn around they, “ambled off to view the mummified body of a man shot to death” (196). Ishmael’s statement outlines the disconnect of the relationship, and shows the second side to to the conflict, that maybe Mother Nature has turned its back on humans. The neglect to humans shown by Ishmael created impatience and frustration within the humans, which caused the humans to go spectate one of their own, a homo-sapien. Us as humans will restore our relationship with nature if we just do not look at nature as a thirty second spectacle, but rather as a piece of art. By doing this, humans will be able to create a deep understanding of nature, and become more patient by creating a connection between art, meaning
