Out of all the car accident related deaths in 2005, 39% of them were alcohol related. Drinking while driving is a crime in all states; however, people continue to drink and drive even though it is against the law. Drunk driving is when one is driving while their blood alcohol concentration is .08% or higher. People ages 16 and above are capable of drunk driving, but drunk driving kills people of all ages. Drunk driving does not only affect the one driving. Drinking while driving is a serious issue because of the affects it has on teens today, the many viewpoints on the issue, and the lack of a solution.

Almost half of these people were the victims of drunk driving. Drinking while driving not only effects the one who had been drinking, but it affects the cars around it. Many people believe that they have not drank as much as they actually have; therefore, there judgement is blurred because of their high blood alcohol concentration. Next, Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) is an organization that spreads awareness for drunk driving. MADD has helped lower the number of people killed per year from about 25,000 to 10,000 since 1982. MADD has helped make people aware that a small mistake can affect many people. Also, MADD develops strategies to help people eliminate drunk driving in the future. In conclusion, drinking while driving is a widespread problem that affects everyone on the roads. Furthermore, drinking while driving is an immensely controversial topic because of the many laws and attempted solutions that are made. Firstly, when the drinking age was changed from 18 to 21 in 1984, the percent of deaths caused by alcohol per year dropped 15% within three years. A solution for drinking while driving can be to create a support group or organization that goes around the United States educating kids and teenagers about the dangers of drunk driving. There are many organizations to stop drunk driving; however, these organization do not talk to children and teens about the issue. To start, people the ages of 15 to 23 years old were involved in 30% of drunk driving deaths in 2007. The mistake of drunk driving can develop when one is a juvenile. If teens and kids are taught the dangers of drunk driving at school, they are less likely to do it as an adult. Teens are more likely to listen to experienced people rather than their parents, so it would definitely benefit teens if experts and support groups came in and enlightened them. Furthermore, young drivers, who are ages 16-20 years old, are 17 times more likely to die in a car accident when they are drunk driving than when they are sober or not drinking alcohol. Also, teenages are three times more likely to get in a car crash than adults, so eliminating drunk driving can help lower the number of car accidents teens contribute to. A support group or organization can teach youths about drunk driving and the statistics. This can encourage teens to be more careful on the roads and more careful about their alcohol intake.
