There is many motivations for Beowulf to kill the three monsters throughout the story/poem. He felt like it was his duty, then he wanted fame and glory also he needed to make a sacrifice. He was a very important person in his village and was most respected for the things he had done for everyone.
First of all, Beowulf felt like it was his duty to take care of the king of Geats because the king was older and Beowulf was young so it was his duty to help him out. That’s when he kills the first monster Grendel. He fights him with without armor because he wants it to be a fair fight against them both and “Beowulf had the strength of forty men” so he knew that he was going to win. That's when Beowulf goes and sets out to go kill the dam but he takes weapons. The only reason is the sexist way that women don't fight/play fair. That's when he goes for fame/glory and that is very important to him because it means he showing the younger generation a good example. Also he wants to be known as a hero for the king he truly is. He kills the dam barely but he also almost dies but he kills her by keeping her head as a trophy.
Lastly, he goes and fights the dragon that wakes up and goes and kills people because he thinks someone stole his treasure. So beowulf takes an army of young warriors and goes to the cave and when he gets to cave the warriors all back out. Except for on and he helps Beowulf fight the dragon and they kill but then he sees that Beowulf was bitten on the throat. Beowulf said he wants to be remember as a lighthouse and wants to be buried with the one on the cliff. The reason for this motivation was for sacrifice and to save his people.
Clearly, there many extents that we will go to to be remembered and worshiped. The three motivations were very important to him and they will always tie in to his death and heroic way. Duty, fame/glory and sacrifice were his top motivations in his
