Japan is a small country located in East Asia. It has been a country since the third century and despite its downfalls it has survived and flourished. Japan has a unique geography, a government similar to the UK and the USA, a very complex economy, and an ancient but interesting history. First off, Japan has an extensive physical geography. Japan is made up of four main islands ( Hokkaido, Honshu, Kyushu, and Shikoku) and thousands of small islands, which are surrounded by the Pacific Ocean, Philippine Sea, Korea Strait, East China Sea and Sea of Japan. It is located on Honshu Island, 60 miles away from Tokyo and has three active volcanoes. These volcanoes have not erupted since December 16, 1707. At the base of Mount Fuji is Aokigahara, the suicide forest. It is called this due to the mass amount of suicides committed in the forest. It is said that this forest is haunted by these suicidal spirits. Aokigahara is comprised of evergreen, hemlock, fir, and Japanese Cypress trees along with some small shrubs. Rivers and streams are short and shallow. The largest river, located on Honshu, is the Shinano-gawa. Shinano-gawa is 228 miles long and it serves as a waterway and it is used for agriculture. Japan has a temperate climate. It has four seasons, like the United States of America, but it has a rainy season. This season occurs between June and July. Japan exports products such as car parts, petroleum, anime, manga, fish, rice, and computers to the USA, Australia, China, South Korea, Hong Kong, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates. Products that Japan imports are food, oil, lumber, and metal ore. Debt is a major issue in Japan, totaling precisely 20.46 trillion US dollars. Because of this astonishing amount of debt, Japan had to raise taxes by at least 3 percent. Citizens of Japan have to pay income tax, enterprise tax (only if they have their own business), property tax, consumption tax, vehicular taxes, and liquor, tobacco, and/or gasoline taxes. Only residents of Japan have to pay income tax, which is 8 percent of their total income unless they make more than 1.95 million
