What's around us plays a major role in how we our live daily, what our health is like, and how we live. With thinks like environmental injustice happening things are making the turn for the worst. One of the major players in environmental injustice is mountaintop removal. What is environmental injustice? What are the effects of mountaintop removal? How is mountaintop removal and environmental injustice linked?
Environmental injustice is overall a prominent thing in the US. As discussed in class environmental injustice is an equal distribution of environmental burdens. it is recognizing the air pollution in water pollution do not affect everyone equally. For example, people living and working in environments where it is more dangerous or bad for their health than others. Environmental injustice goes along with environmental disparities; market dynamics, sociopolitical, and racial discrimination. Market dynamics is where companies look for cheap land or poor areas for companies to put in industries to make the most money possible. These health problems are caused from high sodium/arsenic being released from the mining, as well as, things like magnesium, lead, iron, and hydrogen sulfide. However, that is not the only problem, the mountaintop removal and mining is contaminating the water in these areas. The contamination of the water is caused by the run off of the chemicals, contaminations, and other material being used by mountaintop removal running off into the valleys; which is where the locals that the water from. It is also affecting the air-quality from the coal dust, causing things like cardiovascular disease, lung disease, and cancer. These places have a higher health risk factor than any other
