I agree with you Hannah in the sense of seeing his character build. Not only was it his character, but also his anger and frustration. The altercation with Mr. Covey was not only the turning point in the story, but likewise a turning point in his life. Douglas himself states that "This battle with Mr. Covey was the turning-point in my career as a slave" (Douglass 549) . Mr. Covey pushed Douglass to a point of no return. Douglass expressed his annoyance in a way by saying "that he used to beat me like a brute for six months, and I was determined to be used so no longer" (Douglass, 549).
