Author Brent Staples is a very emtional writer, he tells of events that take places in his life such as the

time when he first moved to Chicago. “ My first victim was a woman-white, well dressed, probably

in her early twenties. I came upon late one evening on a deserted street in Hyde Park, a relatively

affluent neighborhood in an other wise mean, impoverished section of Chicago. As I swung onto the

avenue behind her, there seemed to be a discreet, uninflammatory distance between us.(para 1) I could

only image what was going through his head at that moment, since this was something new to him

and something he had never experienced in his life before. He tell us the type of person he is “ I was

stalking sleep, not defenseless wayfarers. As a softy who is scarcely able to take a knife to a raw

chicken-let alone hold one to a person's throat- I was surprised, embarrassed, and dismayed all at

once.”(para 2)

As a black man living in America I have never experienced anything like this in my life time, I

thought things like this only happen on T.V., The author spoke of another incident that took place one

day while rushing into the office of a magazine I was writing for with a deadline story in hand, I was

mistaken for a burglar. The office manager called security and, with an ad hoc posse, pursued me

through the labyrinthine halls, nearly to my editor's door. I had no of proving who I was. I could only

move briskly toward the company of someone who knew me.(para 8). I could only imagine the
