The poor attack the poor because they distinguish themselves not just as poor, but by color too. The city's white working men were struggling for jobs and money to sustain a family so they instead decided to take it out on “the poor African Americans—their rivals in the city’s labor market—for whom the war was being fought”. The three main ideas in the letter of Mrs. Johnson to Lincoln are fair treatment in battle, the release of any prisoners, and to keep the proclamation in place. Although Mrs. Johnson argues for various different reasons, her primary argument is that she wants Lincoln to ensure equal treatment of the colored soldiers in battle. Mrs. Johnson insists for this because colored soldiers fight for the same reasons whites do, “I know that a colored man ought to run no greater risques than a …show more content…
Mrs. Johnson has sent her son into combat because President Lincoln had promised to care for them and stop as soon as he saw something that was not right. She now writes this letter and ask for these 3 ideas because she is afraid her son may be out in danger.Mrs. Johnson requests this to be done at once, for she does not want Lincoln to let it fold out on its own.Angelina Grimke calls the abolitionist movement the nation’s foremost “school of human rights” because it produces a more full examination of human rights. She defends that if rights are built on moral being, then there should not be any distinction between sexes. Grimke points out “whatever it is morally right for man to do, it is morally right for woman to do”. As Grimke says, “discussion of the wrongs of slavery has opened the way for the discussion of other rights”, this new movement has opened controversy for the true meaning of what human rights is.
