As it was mentioned on the previous paper, Mrs. Bonnie Grape suffers from a mood disorder, specifically a major depressive disorder. During the movie, there is no sign that she received any type of treatment that could have helped her improved her condition. The usual treatment for this type of depressive disorder involves a combination of medication and therapy with a psychiatrist, which end up being effective in most of the patients. The reason that someone with depression must undergo this kind of treatments is because talk therapies are focused on changing the patient’s negative thoughts, emotions and behaviors, while the medication relieves and prevents their mood and anxiety.
Mrs. Grape would have been benefited from receiving this kind of therapies as soon as she started showing depression symptoms after her husband’s death. Everything that happened after that event, her weight gain, anxiety, self-esteem issues, lost of interest in doing normal activities and performing the basic ones very slowly, were a consequence for not receiving a treatment for her condition. Grape, having individual talking therapy, specifically psychodynamic and interpersonal therapy sessions, would have helped her to deal with her emotional conflicts in a better way, instead of ignoring them by overeating and isolating herself to the point of having a sedentary life style. Psychodynamic therapy consists of talking about experiences and it helps patients with their unresolved conflicts, by letting them understand and manage their feelings. Interpersonal therapy consists in working on the patient’s behavior and interactions with other people and it helps to improve their communication skills and increase their self-esteem. By receiving this kind of talking therapies, Mrs. Grape would have been able to overcome the loss of her husband, improve her self-esteem and solve relationship conflicts with her
