Dear members of the Mu Pi chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.,

I am interested in your sorority because I have come to understand that the purpose of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. is to promote unity and friendship among college women through their shared passion for community service, women’s issues, and education. The purpose of your sorority caught my attention because it encompasses topics that are dear to my heart. As a child, I was taught to always be grateful for everything that I had in my life. This gratitude then extended into the acknowledgment that not many people have been given the opportunity to be grateful for the same things as me. Knowing this, I’ve since set out to help others have the opportunity to be more consistently in contact with things that I am constantly grateful for, such as food and education.

Having grown up in New York meant that I was constantly surrounded by poverty, whether it was obvious or not. I often came in contact with people who were living on the street. Seeing others struggle and lack the necessities of life pulled at my heart, and still does to this day. It’s hard for me to understand why so many should go without food when it exists in abundance and is excessively wasted. My passion for helping those who struggled with hunger began when my class at The Spence School decided to do volunteer work at New York Common Pantry, where we would pack boxes of food for families in need as our community service one
