Dilek Yelda Kagnici published the article “Reflections of a Multicultural Counseling Course: A Qualitative Study with Counseling Students and Counselors” with the purpose of relaying their results regarding the impact of a multicultural counseling course on the cultural competence of counseling students. The article first discussed the importance of multiculturalism and the necessity for understanding various cultural backgrounds in order to ethically work with individuals of different backgrounds. The researchers wanted to create a study that included a follow up component in order to “gather students’ reflections of the course post-graduation” (Kagnici, p. 56, 2014). The previous study was comprised of two separate studies that were conducted one after another. The first study was conducted when the participants were currently going through the counselor education program and were enrolled in a multicultural counseling course. The individuals were aware of the study and were provided with information regarding it at the start of the course. The students only had a class once a week and the course lasted for fifteen weeks. The primary goal of the course was to introduce students to multicultural consciousness and information found in various other multicultural courses around the nation. The course outlined the definition of culture, various theories regarding multicultural training, background and development of multicultural counseling, the many cultural differences of Turkey, and the acculturation process. The course consisted of many different homework assignments geared to provide students with a better grasp of multicultural counseling such as reflection papers, discussions in class, papers, presentations, and lectures in class. The participants involved in the study were thirty senior undergraduate counseling students at a large university in Turkey.
