Nothing in the world can beat a clear blue and sunny day at the ballpark watching the hometown team finish up a three game series with an opponent. The city of New York definitely got that experience during the decade of the 1920’s, 1927 to be exact. The 1927 New York Yankees or the Murderers Row, as they are formally known, was debatably the best team to ever step foot on the diamond. Joe Judge, Washington’s first baseman, said it best when his team got demolished by murderers row, “Those fellows not only beat you, but they tear your heart out.” The Yankees lineup was very dangerous, but the nickname was given to six of the eight position players in the hitting lineup. Murderers row consisted of Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Tony Lazzeri, Bob Meusel, Earle Combs, and Mark Koenig. Pat Collins and Joe Dugan were also apart of the lineup, but were less noticeable. That lineup lead the league in multiple categories, and four of the six mentioned are in the hall of fame. The power house was being built in the early 1920’s before that powerful team started their dominance. It all started when the Yankees acquired Babe Ruth from the Boston Red Sox, and Bob Meusel debuted in 1920.(Baseball Reference) Three years later the iron horse, Lou Gehrig, was added to the team. Then a year later Earle Combs was signed, and after him Mark Koenig and Tony Lazzeri were added in 1925 and 1926.
