For this weeks discussion, I will focus on the concept of baclofen for the treatment of muscle spasticity. Working as a pediatric nurse, baclofen was a common medication given to our patients who had cerebral palsy. This medication was commonly given orally or through the g-tube by the nursing staff. However, with advancements in medicine and technology, it was not uncommon for patients to have an intrathecal pump in order to deliver continuous doses of baclofen to control severe muscle spasticity.

As a nurse educator, it would be essential for students to first understand the generic names in addition to the trade name of Baclofen which is most commonly used. Students should have an understanding of the ability of baclofen to act within

Some of the most common side effects include drowsiness, dizziness, weakness, fatigue, nausea, constipation, and urinary retention (Burchum & Rosenthal, 2016). It is also essential that students understand the importance of slowly withdrawing the patient off Baclofen as rapid withdrawal can cause hallucinations, paranoid ideation, seizures, fever, altered mental status, exaggerated rebound spasticity, muscle rigidity, rhabdomyolysis, multiple organ system failure, and death (Burchum & Rosenthal, 2016).

Knowledge (K): Identify essential information that must be available in a common database to support patient care (QSEN, 2018).

A teaching strategy that I would utilize for this section is to create a case study that walks through the complex health history of a teenager with cerebral palsy. The case study would incorporate several different medical institutions, numerous hospitalizations, multiple surgeries, and a variety of care providers. I would then have students work through the case study with an emphasis on continuity of care, essential information that must be identified by each care team member, and critical outcomes if essential information were overlooked or absent from the record. Groups can then present to the rest of the class and facilitate further discussion with the instructor and
