My American Idea For Equality

“This nation was founded by men of many nations and backgrounds. It was founded on the principle that all men are created equal, and that the rights of every man are diminished when the rights of one man are threatened…It ought to be possible, in short, for every American to enjoy the privileges of being American without regard to his race or his color.” This was said by the 35th president of the United States, John F. Kennedy, in his Civil Rights Address in 1963. Everyone’s vision of the American Idea is different, but my belief of the American Idea is equality for all citizens. My American Idea for equality for all citizens because the founders created equality for all, the Civil Rights movement and the Emancipation Proclamation created equality for slaves, and women’s rights created equality for women. My American Idea shows that the founders created the United States for equality for all citizens. In July of 1776, the founders signed the Declaration of Independence. In it, Thomas Jefferson wrote “we hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal.” The founders agreed to this, and this is shown in the signing of it. Women were not given all rights that men had, colored or not. Voting rights were not given to women until the 19th Amendment was added to the Constitution in the 1920’s. Equality for women was given through their rights, like voting. As years progress, equality for men and women has been better because the women are being treated the same as men. Women’s marches in the early months of President Trump’s term are an example of how women are trying to receive equality in our nation. Equality and equal rights are given to women and the nation is now equal. As the founders would say, “all men are created equal” and women are
