Jim defines happiness in Book I, Section II (just at the end) as “. . . to be dissolved into something complete and great. When it comes to one, it comes as naturally as sleep” I think Antonia would agree with this definition.

Antonia is caught between her natural optimism and cheer and the very difficult circumstances that she faced after she moved from Bohemia. With her father’s suicide in America Antonia finds it hard to stay happy with all of the challenges she has to face after her move.

Jim’s happiness comes from leaning against a yellow pumpkin as he is feeling the warm dirt in between his figures and Antonia’s comes from dancing even though she has been told to stop. Even though the two have different things to cause there happiness
