My Brother Sam is Dead is one of the most intellectually stimulating novels explaining the operose life of the Revolutionary War. The Collier brothers are the ingenius authors of this book. The story revolves around Tim and Sam Meeker, as well as their family and close friends. During 1775, the year the story is staged in, Sam has joined the continental army which has caused much grief to his family and friends. This is because his father is a Loyalist and they have many disputes about their beliefs. When he arrives home from being in school at Yale for about a year, his family is shocked to find him bursting through their door on a raining, sunday night. Tim is immediately intrigued by Sam’s choices in politics and that he has chosen a path that doesn’t follow what Father believes. These four versions are how war divides: families, individuals, countries, and communities. One example of war dividing families is, when Sam comes home in his suit and talks about a battle that the Patriots won and his father avoids the conversation and walks away. This shows how upset and how much family’s fight because of war. In chapter seven there is an example of war dividing countries where Father and Tim were on a trip to seal their beef when they were ambushed by a group of cattle thieves. The cattle thieves then shake up Father while they force Tim to step away. Before Father can be severely hurt another group of people , loyalists this time, come to save them. I can infer that this will also affect his view but in a way where he will see that the Loyalists come to save the day, which might make him want to be one. This is an example of war dividing countries not communities because the Loyalists are from Britain, while the Patriots are from America, and those are different
