Violence is never the answer. “War turns men into beasts.” My Brother Sam is Dead is a book written by Collier and Collier in which they explain the bad things occuring during war. So many thing can happen during a war, such as tearing families apart. They also argue against war through the clash of generations. The book also shows the principles versus the reality of war. In My Brother Sam is Dead, althought both sides of war are shown, Collier and Collier ultimately argue that war is futile. One way the authors argue against war is that it tears families apart. Many people lose their family members in war. The book quotes, “A month later everybody’s forgotten it- except the wives and children of the men who’ve managed to get themselves killed”( Collier and Collier 7). This quote means that everybody is going on with their normal daily lives except for those who lost family members. Women and children have hard times and a lot more work to do without the men in their house.
