My Brother Sam is Dead; Theme In the book My Brother Sam is Dead, by James and Christopher Collier, the Meeker family is broken apart due to the Revolutionary War. Tim’s brother was in that war, but on the Patriots side, in which father disapproved of. In this novel many other tragedies happen, such as a British raid and father dying. One of the major themes of My Brother Sam is Dead would have to be that not everything goes your way and that life is just unfair.
In My Brother Sam is Dead father and Tim go on a road trip to sell cattle so they can have money for their tavern. On their trip they encountered a problem, cowboys. The cowboys tried to capture their cattle and goods, but they got lucky when a few British soldiers came to their rescue. On Tim and fathers way back, father wasn't as Lucky, the cowboys captured him when he went ahead of Tim. Sadly, they sent him to a British prison ship where later he died. That helps prove the point that even though that all father had was good intentions, the outcome may never be fair.
