When thinking about how to reach my community and do the most that I can do, I reflect on the quote that drives this essay. The quote presented was "To whom much is given, much is expected". A scripture comes to mind from my life growing up in a loving spiritual family. Thessalonians 5:15, "Always try to do Good to each other and to All people". With this in mind, I consider all people from all walks of life. I have had first-hand experience in seeing a lot of homeless individuals who migrate around my mom's job downtown in a Metropolitan area. With this being a growing trend in most cities, I sought how I could become an impact in my local community. Helping in my community, from making scarves for the elderly to collecting toiletries for the homeless, is a way I hope I’m making an impact while supporting volunteer projects. Another organization that I have had the pleasure working with is Delta Gems. Delta Gems is a developmental group inside of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. It gives a young female like myself an opportunity to grow as an individual while supporting my community in volunteer efforts. While at Robinson High School, I volunteered with the student council where I was the Senior Class Representative to help prepare lunches for the homeless and the elderly within our community. I can recall participating in a project of collecting toiletries for the homeless and a women's shelter. Although due to my age, I wasn't allowed to actually be present when the gifts were given, but I can recall the humble behavior I felt while collecting the necessary items that I took for granted that most did not have as essential needs. I have worked with the local Rice Depot to make food boxes for families who needed the help while
