My Ethical Dilemmas To Work As A Midwife

As a midwifery student, in the future when I am working as a midwife, a scenario I may come across on an antenatal ward could be if a woman suffers an antepartum haemorrhage. In this scenario, the woman’s other children may be visiting with a relative, such as the woman’s mother. If the woman was to have a large vaginal bleed prior to labour, this may lead to an emergency caesarean section. The medical team of midwives such as myself and/or doctors would only be concerned with the immediate health and wellbeing of the mother and baby, not any other factors that may be involved in the woman’s needs, such as waiting for her partner to arrive or making sure that there is adequate care for her other children. This is an example of where the common good is not being promoted as the aim is not for the wellbeing of all, but only focused on the woman and her new baby due to the emergent situation. …show more content…
Compassion may be challenging the woman may be visibly distressed during the situation as she was not prepared and does not have her partner with her to support her. She may also be worrying about her other children during this time. In this situation, unfortunately I may not be able to alleviate these concerns for her as the main priority would be for her health and baby and therefore she may need to be rushed immediately to theatre before any other arrangements can be made. Positivity may be a challenge if this was a situation that I had not been accustomed to.
