The life of my family would begin in a small East Texas town, called Emilee, Texas. In the year of 1892 the small town of Emilee was inhabited by a total of one-hundred and fifty peoples, but by the early 1900 the total of inhabitants’ was down to fifty. Now the town does not exist, the only sign of proof the town existed is the cemetery which happens to be the oldest cemetery in Texas. In this cemetery is where part of my heritage is buried, According to the census of 1860 there was an estimated 182,566 slaves living in Texas. But in 1866 my great grandfather, John Hadnot had the advantage of being born a year after slavery formally ended in Texas, making him the first member of the family to be born free. In Emilee, Texas is where my grandmother Rosetta was raised and where she met her childhood sweetheart who would later become her husband, William Rigsby would move his family to Colmesneil, Texas where William would go on to work on a farm for about 40 year's while Rosetta stayed at home with her children, among those children were my mother Bessie Rigsby born on June 13, 1930. We begin in 1974 with news that Federated Stores Realty was set to begin construction of a shopping mall at the corner of I-45 and the North Belt. A 1.2 million square feet, the mall would dwarf some of Houston earliest shopping centers.(cited from a Nov. 17 Houston Post article) the landscaping will be used to create the illusion of a brick-paved street lined with shops.
