The story “My Favorite Chaperone” is about the hardships of coming from another country that a family has. Maya and her family are from Kazakhstan and moved to the U.S because her mother and father lost their jobs and had to start selling their stuff back in Kazakhstan. Maya, the main character, has to translate for her mother and her father because they do not speak enough english. Nurzhan gets in trouble often for getting into fights with the kids that tease him for his accent and his lack of english vocabulary. Maya isn’t allowed to go to the dance because her parents did things differently back in Kazakhstan. In the beginning of the story Nurzhan gets into trouble for fighting with a boy that was teasing him for his heavy accent.
