My Nursing Philosophy

Nursing is a career not everyone can do, the vigorous training to become a nurse is meant to assure nurses have critical thinking skills, care for the profession and be able to apply critically thinking skills into practice. My philosophy of nursing integrates the knowledge of the pathophysiology of the disease, while combining it with critical thinking skills, compassionate care while respecting the autonomy of each patient. This paper will explain my feelings regarding my nursing philosophy and the ways I incorporate both the nursing metaparadigm and Jean Watsons nursing theory. I will also discuss a policy that incorporates nursing theory in my work setting.

Neuro and geriatric clients on my unit are there for confusion or they may not be able to voice their needs or concerns. Most of the geriatric clients that I care for suffer from dementia, psychosis due to a UTI, Alzheimer’s, forgetfulness and anxiety which may lead to the failure to communicate effectively. In these situations, I am their voice, and most importantly advocate. I make sure that I communicate clearly and use communication boards when appropriate. I also make sure that I educate my patients on their diagnosis and how to minimize further complications. While hospitalized my patients need me to be able to critically think and be able to make decisions in a stressful situation. By being a nurse who can critically think and apply skills to help improve their health while providing a safe environment is crucial. The main component of my nursing philosophy is having a good nurse to patient relationship. A good nurse-to-client relationship is built on trust, and in order to receive the patients trust the nurse need to be consistent, patient, nonjudgmental and caring. Some ways of building trust with your patients are by following through with patients request, providing time frames of when the nurse will return to room next and actually making it to patient’s room when promised. Attaining the patients trust is major for me, I try not to be judgmental with my patient’s beliefs or wishes.
