My Observation Of Orangutans

Orangutans were my choice to research. I've always been curious to why orangutans are like us but are so far down the primate line from us. It is fascinating that they are orange and live high up in trees most of their lives. I wish to learn more about their behavior and their ability to live in solitude. Orangutan means the "man of the forest" and they're critically endangered. They live on two islands in Indonesia at the Tanjung Puting National Park. There are two kinds of orangutans, called Sumatran and Bornean. Orangutans are gentle and compare to older people by the way they move. My experience at the Sacramento Zoo was enjoyable. They had a huge jungle gym in the center with large branches, and hammocks to lounge in or climb around on. The enclosure was like a tiny private island, which had a ditch, a cave and high rocks with a waterfall. The only feeding I saw was the small branches with leaves on it that the one had in hand. The bigger one was snacking on it like a human being would snack on a bag of chips or popcorn. The orangutans were so casual about the meal and laid back as they bathed in the sunlight. When they went to leave, they dropped everything, their branch of leaves and all. The bigger one motion for the smaller one to go down first, following afterward. I noticed when they got to the ground they used their long arms and hands as crutches almost. They were going to their cave and as they did the one grab a giant potato bag as a blanket and dragged it alongside. The orangutan dropped the bag before entering the cave and went in. I noticed one thing about the bigger one walking; It made facial expressions as if it was deciding what to do. They reminded me of an older person with puckered lips and eyes
