This quote applies to the story “Hanging Fire” because the girl feels ignored by her mother, and doesn’t want to bother her. In “Hanging Fire,” the author says things about how her skin betrayed her, living long enough to grow up, and how her mother is in the bedroom with the door closed. The author states “My skin has betrayed me,” and then follows up with “How come my knees are always so ashy?” That quote might mean she feels like she is being bullied because of her skin color, and she feels betrayed by herself.
