I blacked out, falling backwards onto the hard ground, unable to catch myself. All the air in my body seemed to disappear in an instant, leaving me helpless. My best friend jeered, “Get up, you’re fine.” Crowds of people scurried by in what seemed to be slow motion. As my vision faded, I heard voices shouting to me. I don’t remember much. It seemed to happen so quickly. I thought I was down for ten minutes, but later found out that I had been on the ground for over an hour before an ambulance arrived. I had hit rock bottom. My Vocal Cord Dysfunction (VCD) was taking control of my life. I was diagnosed with VCD in seventh grade. It occurs when the vocal cords do not open correctly, making it difficult to breath.
