Life is not always easy in most cases. There are difficulties and sorrows that each human must work to overcome, which is not always easy to do. In “My Life as a Water Balloon,” the writer uses similes, metaphors, and symbolism to indicate that life has obstacles but they can be overcome. This is an anonymous poem by a teenager, relating to their life and personal obstacles. At the beginning the writer describes how he/she used to be very delicate and prone to being hurt emotionally and mentally. Throughout the rest of the poem, the writer discusses how experiences have made him/her a stronger person. A combined simile and metaphor are used to show that people are fragile and it’s often hard not to break down. The author compares his/herself to a vulnerable object and the surrounding people as objects that can have a negative and destructive impact on the vulnerable object. The writer indicates that though many adversities feel as if they can be the end of the world and impossible to move on from, that is not the case. Obstacles can change a person in a way they cannot return to the original form, but this is not always going to be a bad thing. The author shows a personal example by saying, “I will live with the duct tape covering all of those holes in my soul”("My Life As a Water Balloon" 20). This shows that regardless of what one goes through, it is always possible to move on. It may seem as if moving on is unimaginable, but there will be a way to do it. The author uses duct tape as his/her way of repair after a tragic experience. He/she later says, “So that person sobbing in the corner won’t be me”("My Life As a Water Balloon" 26).
