Why do others gain from discriminating against each other’s differences? The two essays, “The Myth of the Latin Woman: I Just Met a Girl Named Maria” and “Two Ways to Belong in America”, demonstrate society discriminating minorities who come to America for a better life. In the essay, “The Myth of the Latin Woman: I Just Met a Girl Named Maria”, Cofer describes her experience as a Puerto Rican girl being raise in America. She fears being judged by her peers and being unacceptable by society because of her heritage. While Mukherjee’s essay, “Two Ways to Belong in America”, reveals the injustice that her sister faced for being an Indian Immigrant not wanting to give up her culture to be accepted as an American citizen. The two essays connect to each other, by showing a children’s and adult’s perception of coming to America. Through their hardship and discrimination they reveal the cruelty of Americans, and continuing to prove their contributions to society.
