First Superbowl

Today we know the super bowl as the game that everybody watches with the expensive live snickers ads. For some people the super bowl is a time to get together with family and friends and for others it's just an excuse not to go to work the next day. But either way the super bowl is an event that brings people together for an exciting game of NFL vs AFL rivalry.

This rivalry began in 1960 when wealthy businessman, Lamar Hunt founded the AFL with Bud Adams. He was also a wealthy businessman from Texas. Their motivation came from the fact that Hunt was rejected twice from the NFL, once for a expansion and once in an attempt to purchase the Chicago Cardinals. With high hopes of bringing professional football to Texas and to acquire a team for the Hunt family name. Starting its 40th season in 1960, the NFL was challenged by a new upstart league. At first the NFL ignored the AFL but the AFL survived and prospered. At first Hunt started hiring NFL rejects who turned out to be quite talented players the NFL coaches had highly misjudged. Soon the veteran league found itself in a bidding war with its new upstart rookie rival for hiring free agents out of college. Eventually both leagues signed an agreement to keep each other from signing players that already played for a team in an opposing league. This contract was held in place for several years but fell apart in 1966 when the NFL’s New York giants signed a place-kicker under contract with the AFL’s Buffalo Bills. As a result of this the AFL struck back, signing eight of the NFL’s top quarterbacks. After some time the NFL was fed up and began
