An operating system has many fundamental roles that are crucial when it comes to its long term success and popularity among a customer base. At a base level, the OS should simplify the use of applications and in essence, make it quite simple for the user to solve any problem that may arise. System reliability is another factor that is quite important for an OS, as should a system be easily manipulated then users could find they’re targeted by cyber attacks which are becoming more and more prevalent as society becomes increasingly influenced by technology. Although Microsoft were already a significant market leader, they saw that the market is rapidly being taken over by smaller, handheld devices.
