Sound In Hero Hero is a movie telling the story of a nameless warrior, known as Nameless, who claims to have dispatched three of the deadliest assassins in the land. The movie begins when Nameless is called to stand before the king of Qin for his valiant achievements. The king desires the knowledge of how he managed to kill the three assassins when no one else could. The scene to be analyzed is when Nameless tells of how he defeated the assassin Sky. Sky is said to be a chess master and the scene begins with a shot of Sky and a soldier from Qin playing a game of chess on a rainy day. The fighting throughout the scene is comparable to the game of chess. The sounds of the scene also contribute to the atmosphere of calm seriousness and only twice differs from this. As Sky fights the soldiers from Qin he never unsheathes his spear tip, only finally unsheathing it after Nameless’ first onslaught. Sky did not see the soldiers as a threat and the sound reflected this. The sound throughout the first fight was the calm Guqin music and raindrops but the sound immediately changes as Nameless approaches signifying that Nameless is a threat. The next time the sound changes is when Nameless asks the blind man to play the two a tune and the two begin to fight from within their minds; similar to how a chess game is a battle of wits. Sky is in no danger from within his own mind and so the music reflects this with the return of the Guqin and raindrops. The next sound change is the final switch to nondiegetic sounds. After the Guqin breaks the nondiegetic sounds begin and Nameless lunges forward to stab Sky, killing him. The sound throughout the scene represents Sky’s danger. When Sky is in little danger the calm sound of the rain appears, however, when Sky is in great danger the nondiegetic more frantic sounds
