Nan Goldin was born in 1953, Washington DC, grow up in the Boston suburb of Lexington. When she was 13 years old, she left home and studied in the Setya Community school in Lincoln where she met her first teacher who introduced to her about camera.
Her early works were influenced by Andy Warhol and Jack Smith's early films, French and Italian Vogue. Most of her works were influenced from her sister’s suicide in 1965 when she was 12. She started to take pictures around her life in order to keep the memories so she would not foget.
